Row
House, Andheri, Mumbai
Due
to the lack of controlling design norms, for the MHADA Housing
Colony, the access to the Thakur Row House is a parody of
architectural styles typifying the aspirations of an upwardly
mobile society. As a rejection of these surroundings, the
house has a reversed frontage. The visually light staircase,
its position as also the double height were crucial to adding
a feeling of spaciousness in the otherwise narrow rowhouse.
The bedrooms on the second floor have louvered entrances
to allow for ventilation.
The house, which is devoid of any expensive finishing or
elaborate detailing, is a successful exercise in interplay
of graphic volumes.
