Set
amongst acres of open space in Mumbai’s largest school
campus, the architecture and planning of the building was
visualized to purposefully depart from the standard multistoried
structure that results when designing in a constrained urban
space. In contrast, thus the school takes inspiration from
the curriculum of these toddlers, centers education around
fun and play.
The
building spread out at ground level and pivots eccentrically
around a “clock tower” dominated entrance (the
clock tower also serving as the locator and focal point
within the surrounding campus) with the classrooms clustered
around two courtyards. The classrooms are designed atypically
– each having its own face and identity. This was
visualized to impart a bond between each group of the children
and classroom.
Working within budget constraints,
the building construction and finishing is simple. The use
of colours was also envisaged to add character and warmth
to the building blocks, but again, could not be realized
due to budget difficulties.
