Residence
at Bandra
The
brief was to design a simple but provocative interior for
a graphic designer. Three apartments of various sizes were
combined into one larger 1600 sq.ft. apartment.
Concern for natural light not being available at the entrance
resulted in a device dubbed ‘the glass box’ which
allowed plentiful light to be filtered into the lobby through
the bedroom. Storage/Wardrobes were used as divisionary tools
to create pure rectangular rooms.
Solid Walnut, Cherry and Beech wood was used to make the shutters
and furniture. Traditional wood joinery such as Mortise and
Tennon, Dovetail, Splice and Lap, Tongue and Groove were used,
expressed and celebrated as details within and throughout
the contemporary context.
Hidden
light sources define, delight and dramatize architectonic
elements. Walls are monochromatically treated allowing the
natural beauty of light and wood to create a sense of tranquility,
so necessary in the hearth of the home. |
