Secondary School Building
An extension to an existing secondary school
building to double the student strength was envisaged. We
noticed that children sorely missed a covered play area especially
during mid-afternoon heat and the monsoon. Keeping this in
mind, classrooms were used to bridge a section of the newly
formed courtyard. Needless to say, natural light and ventilation
were the primary concerns for classroom design. Both wings
of the existing school were connected to ensure smooth movement
for teachers.
Amphitheatre
type-learning areas for music and art were designed to encourage
"under the sky" teaching, which children seem to
enjoy more than being confined to classrooms.
Rain and glare protection was fabricated from rust free GRP
channels in the form of louvered panels. This material was
chosen to reduce the strain of annual painting, which always
seems difficult for school administration.
